When Kansas and Missouri Put Rivalry Aside—for Elections

In 1882, a Kansas tornado lifted a ballot box half a mile through the air on Election Day. The box shattered, ballots scattered, and county residents picked them up and voted anyway.

Today, poll workers in both states face the same test: show up, adapt, and finish the job. This National Poll Worker Recruitment Day, our region's election offices are actively recruiting—and they need you. Nearly half of all U.S. election jurisdictions struggle to staff poll sites. Many who do step up are veterans and military family members, translating their oath into civic service.
